Overview
The Systems Nagios Engineer will provide the technical domain skills and leadership required to effectively deliver high quality monitoring services. You will be the Subject Matter Expert (SME) in a variety of monitoring management technologies, primarily with Nagios and HP Sitescope.
Key Responsibilities
Technology Stewardship
• Possesses, develops, and applies knowledge of trends in the monitoring area, relevant system development technologies and methodologies
• Ensures quality and consistency of design, development (if applicable), testing, and integration testing cycles and deliverables, adhering to Architecture, PMO, and compliance guidelines
• Responsible for following quality assurance, and performance testing methodologies, processes, best practices and techniques adopted.
• Drives continuous improvement of testing tools/capabilities; may include design, definition of roadmaps, standardization of processes and methodologies
• Collaborates and maintains working relationships with appropriate technology vendor contacts and peer company contacts
Solution Delivery and Support
• Integrating key production systems with Nagios for better monitoring and taking care of ad-hoc script requests to improve monitoring.
• Develop tools, interfaces, or wrappers to support system monitoring across multiple management interfaces.
• Develop the logic, scripts, and programs for the distributed agents, clients and/or probes that collect, process, and forward events or schedule jobs to the centralized monitoring, reporting, or job scheduling systems.
• Contribute to the configuration and customization of distributed system/network monitoring agents and scripts for monitoring Unix/Linux, windows, network and database (Oracle, MS SQL and MYSQL), processes, services, perfmon, application logs, SYSLOGs, etc.
• Configuration and customization of synthetic transactions (via Sitescope or equivalent tool)
• Work closely with Unix/Linux, windows, network, and database groups, and with business application developer groups to understand and prioritize their requirements for the effective implementation of monitoring.
• Maximize the effectiveness of the monitoring environments throughout the enterprise.
• Administer and provide software support for Monitoring tools – specifically Nagios
• Alternate with other team members in an off-hours on-call rotations, support monitoring tools and processes.
• Continue to mature and grow functionality within the monitoring space
• Collaborate with Monitoring Architects in ensuing high availability of Nagios/SiteScope systems
• Reports project status and works with performance lead, product, and project management to resolve issues.
• Closely partners with customers to assess feasibility, complexity, and scope of new capabilities and solutions
• Ensures that all capabilities delivered align with original business objectives, service levels, IT strategies, and design intent
• Participates in design / development estimating and scheduling
• Drives and leads technical design services, including requirements analysis, functional/technical design leadership, and documentation / review with business and IT constituents
• Ensures technical documentation is kept up to date (run books, process diagrams, system information, technical documents)
• Oversees future implementations and/or upgrades and ensure that support standards are in place
• Defines proactive activities and tasks required for optimization of stability, performance and architecture
• Perform special projects and departmental initiatives as needed
Basic Qualifications
• Requires minimum of 4+ years of experience designing, maintaining and operating Nagios or equivalent tool within a fast-paced, multi-site environment
• Requires minimum 4+ years of experience as a systems engineer
• Subject Matter Expert (SME) in Network Management tools, Nagios design, implementation, advanced configuration, management, and administration (Nagios a plus)
• Must have strong Unix shell and Perl and/or Python scripting
• Must have working knowledge of basic SQL statements and relational databases
• Solid understanding of SNMP, in both the Unix and Windows environments
• Solid working knowledge of both Windows and Unix Operating Systems, file and directory structures, commands, command-line interfaces and utilities
• Understanding of computer resource utilization and measurement
• Very strong troubleshooter
• Strong knowledge of Software Development Lifecycle
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, high volume, deadline-driven environment
• Excellent verbal and written communication, interpersonal, conflict resolution, presentation, and customer service skills
• Proven ability to evaluate and manage risk
• Proven project leadership skills with the ability to multi-task, delegate and prioritize tasks
• Professionalism in dealing with all levels of management and staff
• Ability to coordinate resources to resolve problems
• Strong consulting skills required to work with business clients.
• Experience working across multiple locations.
• Experience with HP Network Node Manager (NNM), and Microsoft MOM or SCOM a plus.
• Experience with open source Nagios management frameworks such as Opsview or Groundwork a plus.
